We welcome you to the website of the School of Humanities & Social Sciences of the University of Patras, the third-largest public university in Greece. Our School is a modern and innovative academic space dedicated to knowledge, research, and creativity. It promotes the humanities and social sciences, preserves and showcases cultural heritage, and enhances the understanding of the social dynamics shaping the modern world.
Our School, established in 1989, consists of six dynamic Departments that cover a broad spectrum of scientific fields:
The Department of Educational Sciences and Early Childhood Education: Established in 1983, this department focuses on research and practice in early childhood education, contributing to the development of educational approaches that support children’s cognitive, social, and emotional growth.
The Department of Educational Sciences and Social Work: Established in 1983, it specializes in pedagogy and social policy, equipping students with knowledge and skills related to primary education, as well as the support and education of vulnerable social groups.
The Department of Theatre Studies: Established in 1989, this department explores and promotes theatre as a form of artistic and social expression, fostering creativity and theatre education in Greece and internationally.
The Department of History and Archaeology: Established in 2019, it examines historical and archaeological aspects of the past, analyzing evidence and interpreting cultural developments that have shaped the world from antiquity to the present day.
The Department of Philology: Established in 1994, it focuses on the study of Modern Greek, linguistics, and classical literature, advancing philological and linguistic analysis and cultivating language and culture.
The Department of Philosophy: Established in 1999, it fosters philosophical thought, ethics, political theory, and epistemology, shaping scholars with critical thinking and a strong sense of social responsibility.
Our School aims to create an academic environment that fosters knowledge, research, and innovation. Through modern study programs, interdisciplinary approaches, digital technologies and methods, and international collaborations, we provide our students with a well-rounded education that meets the demands of today’s world.
Our research activities cover a broad range of scientific fields, while collaborations with leading universities and research centers worldwide enhance the School’s extroversion and innovation. We promote the development of new ideas and methodologies that contribute to the understanding of human culture and society while actively participating in social initiatives and activities.
